Hello fellow WMT, old school anime, and Swiss Family Robinson fans, welcome to the Swiss Family Robinson project! I’ve been meaning to start this project along with the Little Women project for months, but I focused my attention on Little Women first.

Unfortunately, it will take nearly a year before I can actually start on this project. In the meantime, please watch the Swiss Family Robinson English raws that I have recorded and uploaded here so far. Episodes are shown every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 10 pm Eastern, so come back in this thread once a week to see two new episodes.

Phase I: Recording English Dub Episodes

• Round 1: March 22nd 2011 to September 6th 2011 – Completed
• Round 2: September 8th 2011 to March 27th 2012 – Completed
• Round 3: March 2012 to August/September 2012 - In Progress
• Round 4: August/September 2012 to February/March 2013 – Not sure if I will continue recording at this point in time

Phase II: Adding/Muxing English Audio in High-quality Japanese DVD sources [Project Wyss]

• Insufficient English Raws to start this phase
• Need to purchase Japanese DVDs or download the raws
• Expected start date: End of 2012

Phase III: Transcribing and Timing the English Dubs

• Expected start Date: Mid 2013 (I had planned this for the start of 2013, but Phase II will be extremely difficult)

Phase IV:  Translating and Fansubbing the Japanese Audio

• Need to find a translator for this project ;_;

History of Project:

Well… how do I start this section off? This project somehow started from a blog post at Licca Fansubs. I was watching Anne of Green Gables (Akage no Anne) back in 2011 and became very interested in the World Masterpiece Theater series. I wanted to help contribute to the WMT scene but unfortunately, I had no clue or any knowledge in fansubbing. Nobody would probably take me in as I didn’t have any experience at all, and nobody would want to teach me. All the current fansub groups pretty much only accept those who have some experience :’(

It was then on Licca’s blog that an anonymous poster linked to a thread of BakaBT about recording Little Women and Swiss Family Robinson. I thought I could handle this project as I was available around 10 pm every weekday to record these shows. I was already watching Little Women episodes every night before I knew about that thread so I didn’t mind recording these shows. I really wanted to help with releasing more WMT series to the English world without any knowledge in fansubbing, and this project gave me the opportunity to do so.

Read this Before Downloading/Watching:

For Round 2 recordings and beyond, each episode will usually have four different files recorded from four different streams. The four different streams vary with their bitrate, video and audio codec, and the container format.

I am giving everybody four different options to choose from. The order you should be watching in terms of video quality (from best to worst):

FLV 1000  ≥  ASF 500  >  FLV 300  ≥  ASF 300

Normally, you should only be downloading and viewing the FLV 1000 stream. However, there have been situations where the FLV 1000 recordings have failed on me.  Likewise, several episodes have less than four files to choose from because there was an error in the recordings in one (or more) of those four streams. So if the FLV 1000 stream is unavailable, download the file with the next best video quality from the order presented above.

How to Play these Files:

My two recommended media players that can play all four streams:

CCCP and MPC-HC: http://www.cccp-project.net/
VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If you don’t want to download and install these two programs, the Windows Media Player included with Windows can play the ASF files without any problems.


Note 1: For the FLV streams, VL C crashes when playing certain episodes at a particular time. I will tell you at the Download sections which episodes will crash VLC, and the exact time. Please remember that my recordings aren’t always successful and perfect, and problems recording live streams do happen from time to time.

Note 2: MPC-HC may not play Flash videos (FLV) properly sometimes.  To date, none of the Swiss Family Robinson raws have any issues played on MPC-HC. I will inform you all in the Downloads section if any of the files don’t play properly on MPC-HC. That’s why I suggest you have both MPC-HC and VLC to view all the four different streams

Recordings actually started on March 15th, 2011 but I wasn’t using the proper program and technique to record these episodes. Animestudz taught me how to record correctly to get the exact original video and audio quality as the one streamed by the network.

“The Lagging Days”

It was around the end of July 2011 I discovered my files weren’t always perfect and had lagging issues. I was working on the Little Women project when I noticed the audio would often skip and play choppy. Many of the files listed below have audio stuttering and hiccup problems. We really can’t use any of these for Phase II of the project (muxing/adding the English audio into the high-quality Japanese raws).

Around mid-August 2011, I opted to capture another stream offered by the network: ASF 500. This stream had audio stuttering and hiccup issues as well, but were less frequent and found at different times in the episode.

Some brief comments about these set of recordings:
•   The network, Smile of a Child, started offering the Super Speed 1000K stream on their website in early August.
•   I figured out how to record the FLV streams (i.e. 300 and 1000) that the website streams in September.
•   I managed to fix the audio hiccups and stuttering that was prevalent in the previous two months (see Round 1 recordings). Only the recordings for September 8th, Episode 26, have serious video and audio issues.
•   I will be offering four different files for each episode if all four streams recorded successfully. Try to download and watch the video with the best quality  FLV 1000

The Network trolls Alcoholic
•   The network re-aired Episodes 1 and 2 on December 13th and 15th. The network aired both episodes in the previous week of December 6th and 8th.
•   I wasn’t successful on recording Episode 5, Becca Takes the Helm, on December 27th, 2011. The network aired Swiss Family Robinson half-an-hour earlier than its normal time. My next opportunity to record this episode will happen in June or July 2012. Please visit Round 3 for the recordings.
•   The network showed Episode 2 again on January 3rd, 2012. I have three copies of Episode 2 all aired and recorded within one month!
•   The network re-aired episodes 7 and 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 starting on January 26th. These episodes previously aired in early and mid-January. We would finally see the new Episode 14 on February 16th.

Phase II: Re-Mastered Downloads [Project Wyss]

I’ve been comparing the Japanese raws with the English raws. The Japanese and English videos DO NOT sync with each other unlike the Little Women dubs.

Here’s a spreadsheet showing the length for several English episodes:
Episode Length/Duration

The time for a “typical” English episode, without the opening and ending, averages 20:10. The Japanese raws I have clock in around 22 minutes 20 seconds without the opening, title, preview, and ending.

We can conclude the following for the English dubs:
• Videos are sped faster than its Japanese counterpart
• Many scenes have one to two seconds or more shaved off
• Some minor and unimportant scenes were completely omitted

What does this all mean? Well, I can’t easily add/mux the English audio into the Japanese raw like what I did with Little Women. I don’t know how I would sync them using Avisynth as Avisynth was previously used to time the Little Women series.

For this phase of the project:
• We can’t have dual audio for each episode like the Little Women episodes.
• I will have to release all the English episodes separately, similar to what I did with several Little Women episodes (i.e. 4, 10, 21, 22, 34, and 35)

Once this phase starts in late 2012, all downloads will be found in this post.

Random Notes about Several Episodes

This section is incomplete. More information will be added when I actually have time to watch the episodes.

Musical Pieces
The Swiss Family Robinson anime has several musical pieces. Since this site specializes in obtaining music from various World Masterpiece Theaters in various languages, I will list songs for Swiss Family Robinson in English

Episode 27: For Better or Worse
The kids sing a Swiss folk song for their parent’s 20th anniversary. You can listen to the original Japanese version from watching the Italian and Spanish dubs:

Episode 49: Together on the High Seas
While the Robinsons and the rest are castaway at sea, a beautiful song in the Japanese dub, “Ashita Ni Nareba,” is played at the start of the episode. I think the official title in the English version is “I’m Dreaming of Tomorrow.” The English dub remixes the original Japanese song while using the same melody. I don’t know if the English lyrics were directly translated from the Japanese song.

Other minor musical pieces:

Episode 3: Same opening lyrics and melody but sung with a different voice
Episode 6: Silent Night sung by the crew and passengers on board the ship as it is Christmas
Episode 23: Becca sings a Swiss song from the Alps

Episodes 7 and 8 merged into one episode
The English dubs removed scenes of the family building a raft to escape to the nearby island, and gathering supplies from the sinking ship. Also, that monkey from the fourth episode died in Episode 7, but was not shown in the English dub ;_;

Interesting enough, several clips from the English Opening/Intro came from scenes not shown in Episode 7 and 8.

Source Tape Problems: Episode 20 - Ship Ahoy!
The audio echoes randomly several times throughout Episode 20. I believe this is a problem with the original source tapes and not with my methods to record these videos. I recorded that episode in two different dates and multiple streams, and each had the sound and voices echo at the same scenes.

Deleted Scene: Episode 30 – A Firm Hand
The English dub removed a scene where Anna, the mother, spanks Becca after the events from the previous episode.

Dr. Robinson says it’s a “baby petit cuscus” in Episode 8, Mysterious Island. It took me over 20 episodes to figure out that creature since I began watching the series in the mid-twenties. Excellent News Everyone!

I've successfully recorded Episode 5 of Swiss Family Robinson! I’ll upload the raws when I have the time. You guys can rely on me to get the job done. I’ll explain later with a post.

I'm working 7 days a week right now so the next opportunity I can work on the Swiss Family Robinson project will be Good Friday at the earliest ;_;

Fun Fact: Episode 5 is one of two episodes that has an instrumental version of the Japanese opening found in the English dub. The non-vocal theme song is also played in the first episode, right at the beginning.

The Friday Downloads (F)

The Smile of a Child (SoaC) network now shows Swiss Family Robinson every Fridays at 9:30 pm Eastern, 6:30 pm Pacific. The Swiss Family Robinson replaces the Canadian series Pit Pony which aired previously at that time slot.

Swiss Family Robinson started airing on Friday, March 2nd beginning with Episode 1. I wasn’t aware in the change in programming until I randomly looked at the TV schedule posted on the network’s website, so I wasn’t able to record the first episode.

The most important episode here is Episode 5.

Fun Fact: Right after Swiss Family Robinson, Little Women airs! It’s very tricky to record two shows consecutively.
